MEDICAL ASSESSMENT
Medicine refers to the examination, diagnoses and treatment of a disease or illness through non-surgical means.
A detailed history and a thorough physical examination are essential when your pet is ill. We will examine your pet's various body systems, paying particular attention to those systems that may be causing your pet's abnormal signs. A thorough physical examination of your pet’s eyes, ears, skin, and cardiovascular, neurological, gastrointestinal and skeletal system are examined for any abnormalities.
Diagnostic testing may be necessary to rule out certain problems that could be causing your pet's illness. Blood tests can be performed as necessary to assess the proper functioning of your pet’s kidneys, liver, pancreas, and endocrine system including the thyroid gland and adrenal glands. Urine tests can detect similar problems.
We will always recommend what we feel is best for your pet. Our primary interest is your pet's well-being, and we treat your pet with the same special way we would treat our very own pet.
There is no doubt that the cost of good medical care can be expensive. For these reasons, we recommend that our clients consider Pet Health Insurance, which can cover the costs associated with these unforeseen situations.
CARDIOLOGY (heart)
Heart problems can affect your pet at any age, although they are more often found in older pets. Heart disease is defined as any abnormality affecting the heart, which may be causing obvious clinical signs, or may be subclinical (no clinical signs are present).
Heart failure occurs when the heart no longer has the ability to effectively pump enough blood to the body's various tissues to meet their needs. Some signs of heart disease and failure include coughing, increased respiratory rate or effort (difficulty breathing), unusual panting, weakness, collapse, or in extreme cases, sudden death. If any of these signs are present please bring your pet in to our veterinary centre urgently.
Many heart problems can be identified on routine physical examination.
We can provide first level diagnostics but specialist referral for additional testing is often required to accurately identify the cause of the heart disease.
