KIDDIES CORNER
HOW YOU CAN HELP

Attracting Birds To Your Garden
Helping birds to find good nutritious food can be rewarding. While wild birds do find some food on their own it is getting harder to do. Natural habitats and food sources get destroyed with building and development, the use of pesticides, and the lack of “bird and insect” loving plants being planted in our gardens.

Birdbaths:
You can help the birds to thrive by putting out a birdbath and filling it with fresh water. Birdbaths need to be kept clean and filled with fresh water on a regular basis (every two days). Don’t clean the birdbath with chemicals. Instead using water and a strong scrubbing brush you can scrub it and rinse well. Water always attracts birds and other wildlife!

Birdfeeders and bird food:
If possible hang bird feeders about 6 feet away from a shrub or tree. Birds like to have a place to be able to hide and will dart back and forth to the feeders. If you are feeding birds on the ground do so in an open space so the birds can see if a predator is hunting for them

Delicious Homemade Bird Treat

Enjoy making a delicious treat for the wild birds. Great for all seasons and the birds will love it!

To attract different types of birds you can make peanut butter cones with various types of seeds and nuts, such as sunflower seeds, finch seed, and nuts.  Click on the thumbnails for a closer look.

HERE'S HOW

  1. Pour a pile of bird seed and untreated sunflower seeds onto the newspaper.

  2. Using a dull knife, fill the spaces in the pinecone with peanut butter.

  3. Roll the sticky pinecone in the bird seed and push the seeds into the crevices with your fingers. Make sure you fill it up with seeds.

  4. Tie the string onto the top of the pinecone. Cut the string, leaving it at least six inches long.

  5. Hang the pinecone from a tree outside as a treat for wild birds.
