Chocolate can be hazardous to your pet's health...

There are many things we should consider when dealing with animals, both with our pets and wildlife in general. Most of them are common sense but below are a few tips and hints for those as well as for some of the less obvious ones. We hope they answer a few questions as well.
Chocolate, for instance, is found in many homes. delicious as it is for all concerned, pets can be put at risk as chocolate is poisonous to them and dogs in particular need watching.

The wrapping can be dangerous too and cause intestinal blockages or irritation, but it is the chocolate (which contains the alkaloid theobromine) that can more serious as it is toxic to them. The most common signs of problems are diarrhoea, vomiting, panting, faster heart rate, restlessness, pancreatitis, and neurological problems.

Tips for preventing accidental chocolate ingestion:

  • Make a note of where the chocolate is hidden for treasure hunts so none is left behind.
  • Keep all chocolate high up and away from pets, preferably keep it in the cupboard.
  • Don’t leave your chocolate unattended while playing or watching TV.
  • If chocolate is hidden during the night pets will likely find it so make sure they are safe at night and away from the chocolate.
