DENTAL SURGERY

The comprehensive dental cleaning and hygiene procedure, along with dental home care, are the most important aspects of good dental care for your pets.

Dental work requires anaesthesia to perform these procedures effectively and safely.

As with all surgery performed at Polden Hills Veterinary Centre we take extreme care to perform safe surgical procedures in accordance with the RCVS recommendations.

Dental Radiography

Dental digital radiographs (X-rays) are an essential component of regular dental care. We may be able to see what a tooth looks like above the gum line, but we have no idea what is happening below the gum line or inside of the tooth without dental radiographs.

We recommend full mouth radiographs as part of a comprehensive dental cleaning procedure. We will often find problems that we didn't know existed after examination of the radiographs - problems which, left undetected and untreated, would have continued to cause your pet extreme pain and discomfort.

Dental radiographs are also very important to assess any "missing" teeth in the mouth. It is not uncommon to discover that pets are missing teeth as they mature. Sometimes, the teeth do not form in the first place. Other times, however, a tooth may be impacted or "trapped" below the gum line, and unable to normally erupt. Left alone, these teeth can eventually form large cysts, which can cause destruction of bone as these cysts expand, eventually leading to loss of adjacent teeth, and possible jaw fracture.

Comprehensive Dental Prophylaxis (cleaning)

A professional comprehensive dental prophylaxis is more involved than just removing the visible calculus (tartar) on the teeth. A prophylaxis involves close evaluation of the teeth and supporting structures, removal of all calculus and plaque, both above and below the gum line, cleaning and flushing of the pockets below the gum line, polishing the cleaned teeth, and fluoride application to the teeth.

Homecare following a professional dental prophylaxis is important to maintain a clean, healthy mouth for your pet.

Pain medication is administered. Please go to Post Surgery Care for more information on the necessary procedures and guidelines for your pet once he/she leaves our veterinary centre.
