ANAESTHESIA

PATIENT MONITORING

Although general anaesthetics are significantly safer than they have been in the past, there is still the remote chance of an anaesthetic accident. There are many ways to reduce the risk associated with anaesthesia including a thorough physical examination and blood work prior to anaesthesia.

Anaesthetic monitoring equipment and protocol can also contribute to a safer anaesthesia.

We have stringent anaesthesia and surgical procedures and updated equipment including a special Advisor Surgivet Monitor for monitoring pets under general anaesthesia. This equipment monitors ECG, CO2, oxygen, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature. We use an infusion pump which administers intravenous fluids at a controlled rate.

Your pet’s statistics are charted from the moment your pet is anaesthetised to the time when he or she wakes up.

Comfort: Your pet's comfort is important to us and is maintained during anaesthesia by keeping them warm and pain-free.

Your pet is placed on a heating pad, veterinary bedding and incontinence pad to keep them warm and comfortable. This helps to maintain normal body temperature and speeds up the recovery from anaesthesia. Your pet is constantly monitored to ensure they do not feel any pain during the procedure.

Please talk to us should you want more information.

TRANQUILISATION / SEDATION

Tranquilisation or sedation is used to calm an animal under various conditions. The animal remains awake or may ‘sleep’ but is easily aroused when stimulated. Pet owners sometimes request sedation for their animals during travel, severe thunderstorms, fireworks, etc. Sedation and tranquilisation are not without risk and each animal should be assessed by your veterinary surgeon prior to dispensing these medicines to determine if it safe for your pet.
