The Practice Today |
|
 |
Polden Hills Veterinary Centre is owned and run by veterinary surgeons John Smith and Margaret Walker. John and Margaret purchased the small animal practice, previously known as MacKay and Taylor Veterinary Surgery, in December 2009.
We are proud to have our three dedicated and caring team members, Carol, Hannah, and Teresa, with us as we open our newly upgraded veterinary practice.

We, John and Margaret, live on the property and provide 24 hour emergency services on site. This on-site emergency service means your pet is not sent to other veterinary practices during this most stressful time for pet owners. Living on site also means that every aspect of your pets care is overseen by us at all times. During after hours your pet is not left to bark or cry, nor left to feel stressed and abandoned. Polden Hills Veterinary Centre is our home and your pet becomes part of our family.
At Polden Hills Veterinary Centre, we are committed to providing our small animal patients with high quality pet health care by practicing medicine compassionately and humanely in an honest, caring, friendly, and educational manner. We support the quality of life of your pet. We are patient and approachable and will gladly do what ever we can to answer your questions and work with you to find solutions for your pet’s well-being. We are dedicated to the profession, and each and every pet we see is cared for just as we would care for our own. Your pet is part of our “family”. Our dedicated team shares with our clients the joy of pet ownership and grieves when a loved pet is lost.
We are pleased to say that we are the only veterinary surgeons working in our practice at this time and have established our high veterinary standards. We have made it our policy not to allow short cuts and will expect our high standards to be followed by any veterinary surgeon hired in the future. |
John and Margaret’s practice goals
The foremost concern of ours is to endeavour to fulfill the goal of providing ethical services and the highest standard of veterinary care possible. Your pet’s quality of life is most important! Since purchasing the practice in December 2009 we have invested a significant amount of money into improving the veterinary practices, standards and policies, equipment, and upgrading the facilities.
All these changes are to comply with the recommendations of the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons), adhere to health and safety guidelines, and above all to provide your pet with better animal care. |

Our on-going goal is to grow the practice and continually improve the facilities and practice standards of pet care to ultimately achieve hospital status. Plans are in place to continue improving the facilities and standards with the goal to be an accredited RCVS hospital and veterinary nurse training centre.
Polden Hills Veterinary Centre will always remain a privately owned small animal practice where we are directly involved and invested in our staff, clients and patients. As we live on the property, this allows us to be in close contact with everything that goes on in the veterinary centre 24 hours a day. We feel it is important that we are on site to make sure animals receive the highest standard of care, love, and attention at all times. You can rest at night knowing your pet is a part of our ‘home’ and will be loved and cared for as our own. We go the extra mile to make them comfortable and less stressed while they are away from you.
Important points to consider when choosing a veterinary practice:
Owners seldom realise what happens to their pets at some practices when the surgery closes at night and over weekends and just like us owners would be shocked at what they learn. Owners would also be shocked at what goes on once their pet is admitted by some veterinary surgeons. TV documentaries have exposed some issues and we are pleased that awareness is growing. We strongly encourage you to ask questions – it is your right to know what goes on behind the scenes and even if you have known a veterinary surgeon for a long time it does not guarantee the best practices or standards are followed. We recommend you to always insist upon a tour of all the premises and enquire about after hour/weekend attention at any veterinary practice you decide to take your pet to!
When deciding on a veterinary practice you should seriously consider the following points:
- You should not take your pet to a practice that does not give you a full and detailed tour of the premises.
- You should ask questions about the surgery practices (not all standards are the same - many short cuts are taken by veterinary surgeons).
- You should ask about and see the recovery area and kennels (comfort, lighting, bedding, safety, etc).
- You should ask about pain management and safety standards before, during, and after surgery.
- You should ask some pointed questions about surgery standards and hygiene standards.
- You should feel comfortable about after hours care and comfort of you pet.
- Consultation visits should not be so short they feel like a production line – your pet is unique and deserves the appropriate attention.
John and Margaret would love the opportunity to meet with you and give you a personal tour of the veterinary centre. We would be delighted to show you the changes we have made and share our plans with you.
